Sarah Jama, MPP for Hamilton Centre, Removes Name from Open Letter on Gaza
Subheadline: Jama says letter contained "inaccuracies and generalizations"
Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama has removed her name from an open letter that voiced support for the people of Gaza and questioned the validity of sexual.
Jama, who is the first Somali-Canadian woman elected to the Ontario legislature, said in a statement that she had "deep concerns" about the letter's content.
"Specifically, I am concerned that the letter contains inaccuracies and generalizations that do not reflect my views or the values of the constituents I represent," Jama said.
The letter, which was signed by 23 other MPPs, called on the Canadian government to "condemn the Israeli government's ongoing human rights violations against the people of Gaza." The letter also questioned the validity of sexual assault allegations against Palestinian militants.
Jama said she supports the right of Palestinians to live in peace and security, but she does not endorse the views expressed in the letter.
"I believe that it is important to have a nuanced and informed discussion about the complex issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," Jama said. "I am committed to working with all parties to find a just and lasting solution to this conflict."
